Translate This Page Being motivated, I believe, is key to accomplishing and completing any goal in life. As a teacher, I believe that it is extremely important to help my students become motivated, engaged, and actively involved within the classroom. Through motivating students I am able to create an effective learning environment. Finding an effective method of instruction as well as being enthusiastic, I believe, are two key methods to help create motivation amongst students. |

EnthusiasmThere are five specific ways that teachers can generate enthusiasm in their classrooms. The first is through effective instruction. Through implementing effective instruction, students are more likely to be engaged and interested in the curriculum. Second is noncontingent attention. Noncontingent attention is when a teacher gives a student praise or attention simply because they value them as a person not for the specific work that they have accomplished. It is important for teachers to partake in giving students noncontingent attention because it promotes motivation and engagement amongst students. A third way that teachers can help generate enthusiasm within their classroom is through giving positive feedback. This can be done in a variety of ways. I plan on giving my students positive feedback not only for academic success, but also for engaging in behavioral goals and outcomes. I also plan on rewarding/having celebrations for students when they individually as well as a whole have met content and behavioral standards within my classroom. This is another strategy that a teacher can use to generate enthusiasm within their classroom. Lastly, it is important for teachers to be consciously aware of attempting to be positively engaged amongst students at least three times more often than negatively (Sprick, Garrison, & Howard, 1998). When designing lessons it is important to incorporate these five strategies to build enthusiasm and motivation amongst students. I implement these five strategies throughout the day with students. |
Effective InstructionUsing effective instructional methods within a classroom is key to eliminating negative attitudes and misbehaviors. Effective instruction also helps build and develop a sense of accomplishment, which in turn helps create and build motivational thoughts and behaviors within students. There are many factors that contribute to effective instructional strategies that help promote motivation amongst students such as a teacher’s presentation style, students being actively involved in a lesson, having clear objectives, evaluating student progress, promoting and ensuring high rates of success, and through providing immediate feedback to students. Each individual student is motivated differently. It is my job as a teacher to create a desire for learning within my students. There are many different intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors that can contribute to creating this desire to learn. Within my classroom I hope to promote both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. This is accomplished when students are not only completing/engaging in a task for the extrinsic reward or praise but also for the intrinsic value of having a sense of accomplishment. One way I will motivate students is by having a jar that the students have the opportunity to fill with marbles throughout the day. Marbles will be added to the jar when students are displaying good behavior as well as appropriate time on task measures. That being said, when negative behavior is displayed, marbles can be removed from the jar as well. Once the jar is completely full, the students will receive a party of their choice (for example a pizza/ice cream party or a movie day). Effective instruction has students actively engaged within the classroom. I plan on getting students actively engaged in tasks through first explaining why/how this task will be useful to students in and outside of the classroom. This is important because most people are more willing to work on a task when they feel as if there is a purpose to it. I also plan on explaining how learning this task will eventually lead them to achieve an overall goal they have made for themselves. After this I will relate the new task to a previously learned task. What this does is help students feel as if the new task is relevant to what it is they have already been learning. I also plan on giving students words of encouragement to help motivate them to put in their best efforts to the task at hand. |
