Having a vision is key to being successful in life. I have a vision for myself as a teacher, my classroom, and for the types of relationships I want to have between fellow faculty, parents, and students. Having a vision and sharing it with my students will help provide a supportive and encouraging learning experience and environment.

Long-Range Goals

·      Learn to gather and organize information

o   It is important for students to learn how to gather and organize information because it will help foster learning. In fourth grade students will be switching from learning to read, to reading to learn. By teaching students different learning strategies and organization skills it will help develop self-efficacy, self-confidence, and competency in subject matter.

·      Develop the ability and skills to work independently and in a group situation

o   During this time is when students are beginning to take control of their own learning. It is important for students to learn how to effectively and efficiently work individually as well as in a group setting. These skills are key to becoming a respectable member within our community.

·      Learn to be reflective

o   Reflection not only helps teachers learn about their students but it helps students learn about themselves. Through reflection students are able to go back and see what subjects or tasks they did or did not feel confident in. This is also a log for students that prove that practice makes perfect. They can see the trials and errors they went through before they finally saw success. Reflection also builds and improves metacognition skills.

·      Read with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

o   Fourth grade is the developmental shift in elementary school where students transition from learning to read, to reading to learn. It is important to develop this essential skill because as students continue their education learning becomes an increasingly independent task and responsibility.

I chose these particular goals because I believe that they will help my students have a positive learning experience and become lifelong learners. These goals will also help my students become respectful and responsible members within society. I plan on communicating these long-range goals to my students and their families in a variety of ways. They will be addressed and discussed in class with my students throughout the first week of class. I will have a poster hanging on the wall within my classroom that helps remind students what our long-range goals are. A letter will be sent home to families on the first day of school giving information about our long-range goals and will be further discussed at Back to School Night.

Guidelines for Success

·      Be respectful

·      Be responsible

·      Be helpful

·      Collaborate with peers

·      Always do your best

The first action I would take in addressing these guidelines for success with my students would be to introduce and discuss what these might look like the morning of the first day of class. I would create a poster and have it posted at the front of the classroom for students to be able to see at all times. Throughout the rest of the school year I would simply just remind students to look at the guidelines for success when needed. I believe that it is also important to share these guidelines for success with the families of my students as well. By sharing these guidelines with family members it can help create consistency within the student’s life if the family chooses to adopt these guidelines within their own home.

Family Contacts

Initiating and maintaining contact with families of students is key to their academic success. Before the school year begins I will be mailing a welcome letter to all the families of students within my classroom. Within this letter I will include my contact information, a list of important dates for the school year, and a survey for parents to fill out about their preferred method of contact. I will also include a pre-addressed and stamped envelop for families to mail back their surveys. All of this information can also be found on this webpage.

When addressing discipline issues with family members about my students I would first like to have a phone call with the parent or legal guardian of the student. I do not believe in sending notes home regarding discipline issues because I think that it is too easy for the note to get “lost”. Through calling the parent or legal guardian I am able to discuss both positive and negative behaviors of their child with them. Through doing this I believe that it helps parents see that their child is still doing well in school, there are just some areas that need some improvement or focus. If the behaviors continued I would then have a parent teacher meeting to discuss and develop a way to implement discipline and guidance procedures to use at school and home when that specific behavior is present.

Parents and family members will be offered the following methods of contact they wish to receive throughout the school year:

·      Email

·      Letters home through student

·      Letters home through mail

·      Phone calls

·      Text messages

·      Skype

·      Parent teacher conferences

As stated earlier, parents will choose which method of contact they prefer when filling out the survey that was given to them. So please check your mailbox! I will also provide a chance to take this preferred method of contact survey here online! I believe that through offering a variety of ways to stay in contact throughout the year with my students’ families it will foster collaboration, a sense of community, and create a sense of consistency from the classroom to home.
